Associated Program: Community Center
When Jose first visited Columbia Ability Alliance’s Community Center, he wasn’t excited. In fact, he turned to his parents and asked, “Do I have to?” That moment reflected how uncertain he felt, about the center, about change, and about himself. His first visit came and went, and nearly a month passed before he returned.
Jose had been struggling. At home, his behavioral challenges were escalating. His parents were exhausted, and Jose’s tendency to run away for days at a time was creating safety concerns and emotional strain on the entire family. They were looking for help, but also for hope.
When Jose came back to the Community Center, something started to shift. Slowly, his comfort level increased. He began engaging with the staff, participating in daily activities, and forming connections with others. Instead of asking if he had to go, Jose began asking if he could go more often.
Today, thanks to scholarship support, Jose attends the afternoon session five days a week. He now runs through the doors with excitement and is often the last one to leave. At home, his family reports a transformation, they see more emotional stability, greater communication, and a sense of calm that hadn’t existed in years.
Jose’s story reflects the Community Center’s mission: to create a welcoming, structured environment where individuals of all abilities can build confidence, develop life skills, and find a sense of belonging. With daily sessions, community outings, therapeutic activities, and a caring team of staff and volunteers, the Community Center supports clients and families in real, lasting ways.
