Welcome to the Heart of Community Connection

At Columbia Ability Alliance, our Community Center is more than just a day program, it’s a vibrant space where individuals are supported, celebrated, and empowered. We offer weekday programming for adults over 18 with intellectual or developmental disabilities and other life barriers, providing meaningful opportunities for social engagement, skill-building, and personal growth.

Whether you’re looking for structured respite care or enriching daily experiences, we offer a flexible, inclusive, and supportive environment designed to meet each individual’s needs.

What Is Adult Respite Care, and Why Does It Matter?

Adult respite care gives family caregivers a planned, reliable break while their loved one spends the day somewhere safe, engaging, and fun. It’s not a last resort, it’s a normal, healthy part of caring for an adult with a disability over the long run.

Caregiving is rewarding, but it’s also demanding. Many family caregivers manage work, household responsibilities, and caregiving duties all at once, often with little built-in time to rest. Without regular breaks, that kind of sustained responsibility can wear on a caregiver’s health and energy over time. The ARCH National Respite Network, a national resource center focused on respite care, notes that consistent access to respite is one of the most effective ways to help families sustain caregiving over the long term rather than reaching a breaking point.

Our Community Center is built around that idea. When your loved one spends the day with us, they’re not just being “watched”, they’re building friendships, trying new activities, and having a genuinely good day. Meanwhile, you get real time back: time to rest, run errands, work, or simply breathe.

In Washington, adult respite is also a recognized service under several Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA) waiver programs, which means many families can access our Community Center at little to no direct cost, depending on eligibility. Our team can help you understand whether DDA respite funding applies to your situation, or walk you through private-pay options if it doesn’t.

A Typical Day at the Community Center

No two days look exactly alike, which is part of the point, participants stay engaged because there’s always something new on the calendar. A typical week might include:

  • A cooking or baking class focused on practical life skills
  • A group outing to the library, a local park, or a bowling alley
  • Music, games, or a Guild E.D.G.E. gaming session
  • Light exercise or a movement-based activity
  • A seasonal celebration or themed event

Activities are chosen with real intention, not just to fill time, but to build confidence, independence, and connection. Staff get to know each participant’s interests and pace, so the day feels personal rather than generic.

Who Is This Program For?

  • Adults (18+) with disabilities or other life barriers
  • Individuals receiving DDA respite funding or seeking private-pay options
  • Families looking for structured, engaging care and daytime support
  • Case managers and referral partners supporting clients seeking enrichment and connection

Many of the families we work with come to us after searching specifically for adult respite options in the Tri-Cities, often after a caregiver has reached a point of real exhaustion. If that’s where you are, know that reaching out isn’t giving up on anything. It’s making sure you can keep showing up for your loved one for the long haul.
