Associated Program: Employment Services
When Elliott first connected with Columbia Ability Alliance, he was looking for more than a job, he was looking for hope. His journey hadn’t been easy. Born with glaucoma, Elliott faced vision loss from an early age. As a child and young adult, he endured bullying, social isolation, and a lack of accessible resources. These challenges compounded over time, contributing to severe depression and a years-long struggle with addiction.
But Elliott’s story is not one of defeat—it’s one of remarkable transformation.
After getting sober, Elliott was referred to Columbia Ability Alliance’s Employment Services program. He was paired with a compassionate and experienced Employment Specialist who took the time to truly understand Elliott’s goals, fears, and passions. Together, they created a plan that would help him move forward at a pace that respected his journey.
During their early conversations, Elliott shared a powerful realization: he wanted to help others who had experienced the same hardships. With his lived experience and insight, Elliott realized he could make a meaningful difference as a Peer Certified Counselor, someone who supports others navigating mental health, addiction, and social barriers.
With encouragement from his Employment Specialist, Elliott began the process of pursuing certification. He worked on building a resume, practicing interview skills, and preparing for what would be his very first job interviews. At the age of 36, Elliott completed not one, but two interviews, a milestone he once believed was out of reach.
Today, Elliott is well on his way to becoming certified, and his confidence is growing by the day. What stands out most isn’t just the career goal, it’s the clarity and purpose he’s gained. He’s no longer weighed down by what he’s been through; instead, he’s focused on who he can help.
Elliott’s journey reflects the heart of Columbia Ability Alliance’s Employment Services program: we don’t just help people find jobs, we walk alongside them to discover what’s possible. From personalized career planning to on-the-job coaching, the program meets individuals where they are and supports them every step of the way.
As Elliott continues his journey, he’s already becoming a role model. His courage to share his story, and turn his pain into purpose—is exactly why Columbia Ability Alliance does what it does.
