Finding a job can feel harder than ever. Add to it that traditional resumes and interviews don’t always capture a person’s true potential, especially for individuals with disabilities. That is why Columbia Ability Alliance offers Community-Based Assessments, through Employment Services, a program designed to connect local businesses and job seekers, helping those seeking a career discover which types of work truly fit them.
What Is a Community-Based Assessment?
A Community-Based Assessment is a short-term, real-world work experience hosted by a local business. Job seekers can use this opportunity to explore career interests and determine whether their abilities align with the job setting. It is a hands-on way to explore an industry field without the pressure of conventional training or hiring processes.
Why Community-Based Assessments Matter for Job Seekers
Community-Based Assessments provide immense benefits for job seekers. When participants get to try out real tasks, experience the work environment, and receive feedback, it helps guide them on their employment journey. Job seekers who have participated in the program:
- Discover what they like (and don’t like) about a work setting
- Build confidence and pride through hands-on experience
- Demonstrate skills that may not show up in interviews.
- Engage and connect with colleagues and mentors
Since this isn’t an interview, job trial, or onboarding, job seekers can focus on learning and self-discovery in a pressure-free, supportive environment rather than trying to meet expectations.
We have found that this type of program greatly benefits those exploring employment for the first time, job seekers unsure of which type of work fits them best, people who struggle with traditional interviews, and those seeking meaningful, supported employment pathways.
Benefits for Local Businesses: Zero Risk, Real Impact
Community-Based Assessment benefits local businesses too, not just the job seeker. When a local business partners with Columbia Ability Alliance to host a Community-Based Assessment, they are opening their doors to inclusion, community impact, and zero risk.
Local businesses not only have the opportunity to support someone in discovering their career path, but also to meet potential future talent. There is no cost to the business; the program covers insurance and compensation, and a dedicated Employment Specialist will coordinate everything.
All the business needs to do is commit to the assessment duration, provide a welcoming space where participants can try various duties, and share their observations with the CAA team.
How the Community-Based Assessment Process Works
Getting involved in a Community-Based Assessment is rather easy. All the business needs to do is contact us at Columbia Ability Alliance to start the process. However, it is important to remember that this is not a job offer or a trial hire; there is no expectation from either party to proceed with employment.
After you have connected with Columbia Ability Alliance, one of our Employment Specialists will review your business to ensure compliance with the program. After confirmation, you be connected with a job seeker.
The Employment Specialist will outline the program components, and, if all is in order, you will be given a short-term agreement to sign outlining the schedule with your participant. Most Community-Based Assessments run for 10–15 workdays, with participants typically working 3–4 hours per day, 3–5 days per week.
Throughout the assessment, a dedicated Employment Specialist will coordinate with your team. A job coach may assist if needed, and CAA staff will check in 1–2 times per week throughout the assessment.
While there are no employment expectations, should you want to make an offer to the job seeker at the end of the assessment, you certainly can!
Common Questions About Community-Based Assessments
Do I need to pay the participant?
No, the CAA provides a stipend for the participant’s time.
Am I responsible for insurance or liability?
No. CAA provides all necessary insurance and Workers’ Comp coverage.
What if the participant isn’t a good fit?
That’s okay; this program is about exploration, not hiring. We always appreciate honest feedback.
What if I want to hire the participant after?
Employers are welcome to offer employment through our Supported Employment Program. However, there is no expectation for hire, and participants are not required to accept job offers unless they want to.
