Everyone deserves to belong to their greater community. Unfortunately, those with disabilities often face barriers to doing so. Community Inclusion services are designed to help create a path forward so they can gain access to their community in ways that support personal goals, develop passions and interests, and build social connections. Keep reading to learn more about what Community Inclusion is, the real-life benefits of it, and how participants can take advantage of our Community Inclusion services.
What Is Community Inclusion?
Community Inclusion is a service designed to support adults with developmental disabilities in staying active and engaged in their community outside of paid employment.
The goal is for adults to build relationships, develop new skills, and pursue personal interests in typical community settings with other individuals without disabilities, rather than just with paid staff at designated programs.
Whether this means volunteering at a local nonprofit, joining a club, taking a recreational class, or participating in other community activities, Community Inclusions services help make those opportunities a reality.
Real-Life Benefits of Community Inclusion
Community Inclusion is not about “keeping busy,” but about fostering meaningful participation and personal growth. Those who participate in Community Inclusion experience the following benefits:
#1: Building Social Connections
Individuals with developmental disabilities often experience social isolation. By participating in Community Inclusion, they get to build social connections in their communities. Community outings and group activities help participants form friendships with people they likely wouldn’t otherwise have the chance to meet, helping them to be part of something bigger.
#2: Developing Life Skills
Community Inclusion activities help participants build and develop further life skills. From navigating public spaces to engaging in local transportation to practicing communication, these opportunities allow participants to further develop personal and professional life
skills. Many participants end up applying what they have learned to future employment and personal opportunities.
#3: Exploring Interests and Hobbies
Community Inclusion gives participants opportunities to try new things, discover passions, and build confidence through experiences they enjoy. This provides structured, meaningful opportunities outside the home for them to productively pursue what matters most to them.
#4: Increasing Confidence and Independence
The more one engages with their community, the more comfortable and self-assured they become in different environments. This applies to anyone, but especially to those with developmental disabilities. Consistent interaction with the world creates greater confidence in one’s own abilities, furthering natural independence.
#5: Building Rapport with the Community
Community inclusion doesn’t just benefit individuals with disabilities, but it also strengthens the entire community. Unfortunately, many people with developmental disabilities still face unfair stereotypes or misunderstandings, often because others have had limited opportunities to interact with people whose experiences may differ from their own. When individuals with disabilities actively participate in community life, it helps create greater awareness, understanding, and connection.
These everyday interactions break down misconceptions, encourage acceptance, and remind people that individuals with disabilities are valuable, capable members of the community. This inclusion creates opportunities for genuine relationships to form. It allows community members to learn from one another, build rapport, and foster a more welcoming and compassionate environment for everyone.
#6: Supports Families and Caregivers
Community Inclusions services also provide meaningful support for families and caregivers. Many caregivers spend years balancing multiple responsibilities while trying to meet their loved ones’ emotional, social, and daily needs. Over time, this can lead caregivers to feelings of isolation, stress, and burnout. Community Inclusion offers a structured, safe, and supportive way for their loved ones to stay active, engaged, and connected within their community. Participants develop independence outside the home, while caregivers gain peace of mind knowing their loved one is safe, supported, and thriving.
How Columbia Ability Alliance’s Community Inclusion Services Work
At Columbia Ability Alliance, we offer Community Inclusion services as a part of our Employment Services continuum. Through the Home and Community-Based waiver service provided by Washington State Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA), we work alongside each participant to create a plan that reflects their interests, strengths, and personal goals.
Community Inclusion is available to those who have completed at least nine months of DDA employment services or are age 62 or older. Individuals can choose to participate in Community Inclusions alongside or after employment services, depending on their personal goals and waiver funding.
Our staff will work with your family member to select activities and opportunities that best meet their interests and needs, while also assisting them in defining the technical requirements, such as navigating sign-ups and arranging transportation.
If you believe Community Inclusion may be right for your family member, or if you want further information on eligibility, our team is happy to walk you through it. Simply give us a call or contact us through our online form to get started.
