Celebrating Opportunity Kitchen Graduates and Program Transition

Columbia Ability Alliance celebrated the graduation of five students from its Opportunity Kitchen food service training program on Wednesday, February 18 at the Richland Federal Building.

Opportunity Kitchen is a 12-week culinary training program designed to help individuals with disabilities and other employment barriers gain job-ready skills for careers in food service, hospitality and catering. Students complete hands-on instruction in safe food handling, cooking techniques, recipe execution, catering operations and customer service, earning program certification and a Food Handler Permit upon graduation.

Participants also receive life skills training focused on workplace readiness, confidence building and overcoming personal barriers. Many students face challenges such as disabilities, mental health conditions, unstable housing or recovery from substance use. Upon completion, graduates work with Columbia Ability Alliance staff to secure employment aligned with their strengths and interests.

Since launching in 2019, Opportunity Kitchen has prepared 76 graduates for employment in local restaurants, bakeries and hospitality settings throughout the Tri-Cities.

This ceremony marked the final Opportunity Kitchen graduation held at the Richland Federal Building. The program will soon transition its operations to the new Columbia Valley Center for Recovery, where staff and students will prepare meals for individuals receiving treatment, expanding both workforce development and community impact.

“We are proud to celebrate the graduation of our 18th Opportunity Kitchen cohort and the hard work these students have shown throughout the program,” said Michael Novakovich, President and CEO. “Our transition to the Columbia Valley Center for Recovery strengthens the program’s sustainability while providing consistent, real-world kitchen experience for our students, including those at the appropriate point of their recovery journey who are looking to gain appreciable employment skills. We’re excited to grow this partnership, enhance community health in a unique fashion, and expand our regional impact.”
