Big Things Are Ahead for Opportunity Kitchen

We are excited to announce that Opportunity Kitchen has officially moved to the Columbia Valley Center for Recovery in Kennewick. At our new location, the program will continue its culinary training program while expanding our community impact in a meaningful new setting. Here’s a look at what’s on the horizon.

What Is Opportunity Kitchen?

The Opportunity Kitchen is a no-cost, hands-on culinary training program that helps adults build skills, gain confidence, and pursue employment in food service, catering, or hospitality. Over the course of the 12-week program, participants get to receive real kitchen instruction, life skills support, and individualized coaching.

All in a welcoming and inclusive environment led by our experienced Executive Chef and Program Specialist, this training goes beyond cooking to help participants develop marketable skills with the support and structure they need.

Unlike traditional culinary programs, Opportunity Kitchen is designed for adults who are ready to grow their abilities, learn the industry, and put in the work, but face barriers that have made employment difficult. Participants are adults who experience one or more of the following barriers:

  • Living with a disability or mental health condition
  • Experiencing homelessness or unstable housing
  • Surviving domestic violence
  • Earning below the poverty line
  • Reentering the community after incarceration

By receiving instruction at the Opportunity Kitchen, participants not only gain real-life skills, but they walk away with credible culinary training, their Washington State Food Handler Permit, and assistance in finding employment after employment.

A New Home at the Columbia Valley Center for Recovery

We are excited to have made the move to Columbia Valley Center for Recovery in Kennewick, the first inpatient recovery facility to serve the Tri-Cities.

This center was created as a critical local need, as people experiencing mental health or substance-use crises in the area have been desperately underserved for far too long.

The recovery center expects to start with 60 patients and 100 staff, with further expansion and new services being added in later phases. Responsible for the kitchen, the Opportunity Kitchen will serve as a support pillar for the center, bringing nourishing food to those in an important stage of healing and stabilization.

Training That Happens in a Real Working Kitchen

Nutrition is a cornerstone of recovery. Proper nutrition during treatment and recovery transitions supports physical repair, mood stabilization, improved sleep, and emotional stability. It takes a well-run, compassionate kitchen program and team to ensure dignity and care.

Our new location at Columbia Valley Center for Recovery strengthens our training model, as students are taught not just in a classroom but in a real-world environment. The Opportunity Kitchen is responsible for providing three meals and two snacks daily, seven days a week. As Chef Derek Smith stated in the Tri-City Herald, “We’re going to participate in that environment every day making certain that people are nourished there and supporting them in their recovery.”

Why This Move Expands Opportunity Kitchen’s Impact

The impact of the Opportunity Kitchen’s new location is vast. Not only are trainees getting real, hands-on experience in a client-facing kitchen, but the individuals in recovery at the center receive consistent meals and snacks from an inclusive, caring staff who want to be there.

Furthermore, graduates of the program gain the skills they need to advance in the hospitality industry, moving them from instability toward employment and purpose, and benefiting the local community as a whole.

There is also the beautiful aspect of the butterfly effect, with a high likelihood that some of the people treated for recovery will qualify to become students, creating a circular model of care and connection. Sous Chef Natalia Kondratkaia is the perfect example. Graduating successfully from the program, Sous Chef Kondratkaia later became an employee of the program, demonstrating to current students that there is a path to build a better life.

At the end of each day, this move is a win for participants, the recovery center, and the broader Tri-Cities Community.
