Alexander’s Story: From Quiet Beginnings to Culinary Confidence at Columbia Ability Alliance

At Columbia Ability Alliance, we believe in potential — and in creating the space, support, and training to unlock it. Alexander’s story is one of transformation, possibility, and pride. It’s also a shining example of how our Opportunity Kitchen program helps young adults grow, both personally and professionally.

Alexander was always a gentle and quiet child. As his father recalls, he spoke very little growing up and was eventually diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum. School was sometimes a challenge, but things began to shift when his family learned about Columbia Ability Alliance and our School-to-Work transition services.

“As we stayed in communication with CI, we learned about Opportunity Kitchen… so I said, ‘Hey, you want to try this?’”

At first, Alexander was hesitant. But once he joined Opportunity Kitchen — a hands-on culinary training program led by skilled professionals like Chef Derek — everything started to change.

Learning, Growing, and Finding Purpose

From basic kitchen safety to advanced knife skills, Alexander learned it all: small dice, large dice, juliennes — he proudly names them all. But the real transformation was in his voice and confidence. According to his mentors, Alexander blossomed as he found his rhythm in the kitchen.

“He show me a lot of experience… knife skills, cooking, baking.”

His growth didn’t go unnoticed. After graduating from Opportunity Kitchen, Alexander was referred to Wingstop by one of his CI support coordinators — a chance conversation that led to a perfect match.

“He brought him in with his parents. We sat down and talked a little bit, and Alex was just… I was like, this is a fit.”

A Job That’s More Than Just Work

Now employed at Wingstop, Alexander has found what he calls his “dream job.” The supportive team, the routine, and the opportunity to contribute all bring him joy — and bring his parents an overwhelming sense of pride.

“When my son says, ‘Hey Dad, I work just like you’… I can’t put it into words.”

Alexander’s success is deeply personal, but also universal. It’s a reminder that when individuals are given tailored support, real-world training, and respect — they thrive.

Our Commitment: Creating Pathways to Independence
