Service has the power to build bridges, create purpose, and strengthen communities. It’s a belief that drives the Columbia Ability Alliance Community Center, and one that was put into action on Saturday, February 22nd, when a small but dedicated group of clients and staff attended the Day of Service at the Tri-City Union Gospel Mission in Pasco. While the turnout was modest, the impact was profound, as participants spent the day learning, engaging, and giving back to their community.
The Columbia Ability Alliance Community Center is more than just a safe space—it’s a place where individuals with disabilities find opportunities for social engagement, life enrichment, and community integration. This Day of Service was no exception. It wasn’t just about volunteering; it was about inclusion, dignity, and the transformative power of coming together as a community.

At the Tri-City Union Gospel Mission, clients and staff rolled up their sleeves to clean up after lunch, assist with daily chores, and connect with the Mission’s staff and guests. These tasks, while seemingly small, were deeply meaningful. They provided an opportunity for participants to contribute in tangible ways while also gaining a better understanding of the challenges faced by those experiencing homelessness.
“We believe that everyone, regardless of ability, deserves the opportunity to contribute and feel valued,” said Tiffinni Halka, Community Center Manager at Columbia Ability Alliance. “This Day of Service is not just about lending a hand—it’s about creating a deeper connection between our clients and the broader community.”
For the clients who attended, the day was a chance to step outside their usual routines and engage with the world in a new way. It was a reminder that their contributions matter and that they have the power to make a difference. For the staff, it was an opportunity to witness the strength and resilience of their clients as they worked side by side, breaking down barriers and building bridges of understanding.
The Day of Service also highlighted the importance of partnership. The Tri-City Union Gospel Mission, which provides critical support to individuals experiencing homelessness, welcomed the Columbia Ability Alliance group with open arms. Together, the two organizations demonstrated how collaboration can create a ripple effect of kindness and inclusion.
While only a few clients and staff were able to attend, the experience left a lasting impression on everyone involved. It was a reminder that service is not about the scale of the effort but the sincerity of the intention. Whether it’s cleaning up after a meal, folding laundry, or simply sharing a conversation, every act of service has the power to uplift and inspire.
As we reflect on the Day of Service, we’re reminded of the importance of creating opportunities for individuals with disabilities to engage with their communities. It’s not just about what they can receive but also about what they can give. When we open doors for inclusion, we create a world where everyone has the chance to contribute, connect, and thrive.
The Columbia Ability Alliance Community Center is committed to continuing this work, fostering a culture of service and connection that benefits not only our clients but the entire community. We’re grateful to the Tri-City Union Gospel Mission for their partnership and to everyone who participated in this meaningful day.
Service is more than an act—it’s a mindset. And as we move forward, we’ll carry the lessons of this Day of Service with us, striving to build a more inclusive, compassionate, and connected world.
