National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM)
This year marks the 80th anniversary of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) — a time to honor the contributions of workers with disabilities and promote inclusive employment practices.
First recognized in 1945 as a week dedicated to workers with physical disabilities, the observance evolved over the decades. In 1988, Congress officially designated it as NDEAM, expanding its focus to include individuals with all disabilities, including mental health conditions. Since 2001, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) has led the national celebration.
As part of the lead-up to America’s 250th anniversary in 2026, this year’s theme — “Celebrating Value and Talent” — recognizes the skills, innovation, and dedication workers with disabilities bring to our workplaces and economy.
At Columbia Ability Alliance, we celebrate NDEAM by sharing stories of empowerment, highlighting inclusive employers, and championing the belief that when everyone can participate, our community thrives.
